Tastes of Tasmania: Dairy

Tasmania is home to around 700 farms producing dairy products that are up there with the best from any corner of the globe. The friendly climate, good soil, fresh air and clean, clear rainwater contribute towards the pastures being rich and vibrant, combine to create an ideal environment for Tasmania s cows and goats able to produce milk of exceptional quality and taste. Add to that the skills of the local cheese and dairy produce makers and you have the perfect recipe for a range of products that are in high demand across the globe.

Being able to sample and purchase this wonderful dairy produce at or within a stone's throw of the farm gate, right after the curding and ripening processes has taken place, is a privilege reserved for the Tasmanian traveller and one which should not be passed up lightly. At numerous cheese factories across the state, free tastings are given, often within view of the very cows that produced the milk from which these goodies were made,grazing contentedly in nearby green pastures, or lining up in a paddock a few metres away, awaiting their turn at the milking machine.

Pyengana Cheese

Up the road from Pyengana's famous The Pub in the Paddock is another Pyengana institution - Pyengana Dairy Company. Its renowned Clothbound Cheddar is produced by John Healey using the original method established by his great grandfather at the turn of the 20th century. With such a long history of production, Pyengana Clothbound Cheddar is one of Australia's oldest specialist cheeses.
Attached to the dairy is the Holy Cow Cafe, a wonderful place to do a little cheese tasting, or to stop and enjoy a light meal as the cows on the other side of the fence jostle for a spot on the laser-guided milking machines.


Bruny Island Cheese Co.

Founded by Nick Haddow in 2003, we first started making cheeses inspired by Nick's travels and training throughout the great cheese producing regions of the world. Our cheeses are all made and matured using traditional techniques and are highly regarded as being some of the finest artisan cheeses made in Australia. We want our cheeses to reflect the seasonal nature of our Huon Valley farm and our herd of rare breed cows. We want our cheeses to show a distinctly Tasmanian character.

Mountain River Yoghurt

Mountain River Yoghurt was established in early 2011 and began trading at local growers' markets in Southern Tasmania. Mountain River Yoghurt is Tasmania's only pot-set yoghurt. Made in the pristine Huon Valley south of Hobart, our yoghurt is hand-made using non-homogenised cow's milk.

Our award winning yoghurt is available in over 20 retail outlets across Southern Tasmania and is used by over a dozen chefs in cafes and restaurants. Mountain River Yoghurt is proudly family owned and operated.


Grandvewe Cheeses

Grandvewe Cheeses produce a wide range of products, with a focus on high-quality sheep cheese and other dairy products made from their own flock. Come and see our sheep milking demonstrations daily from 3.00pm (October-March). Children are welcome to view our lambs. Hartshorn Distillery is a new Tasmanian micro distillery making boutique batches of Vodka and Gin from our own.

Wicked Cheese, a family owned boutique cheese maker based in Richmond, has emerged in a few short years to gain recognition as one of the most impressive, high quality, hand-made cheese ranges in Australia. Wicked Cheese Triple Cream Brie was awarded the Best at the 2008 Royal Melbourne Show, Wicked Cheese Brie was awarded Best White Mould Cheese in Australia at the 2010 Australian Grand Dairy Awards. In addition Wicked Cheddar has won Best Cheddar in show at Royal Melbourne in 2013.

Heidi Farm Handcrafted Cheese

Legend has it that when Heidi Farm's founder first set eyes on the land where our farm still flourishes today, he yodeled with joy because the idyllic unpolluted environment was the perfect location for crafting farmhouse Swiss style cheeses. Nestled in Tasmania's north, Heidi Farm cheeses are produced using milk from neighbouring farms, giving them a consistent quality and unique characteristic that is specific to the location.


King Island Dairy

According to local legend, the first European pasture reached King Island in the early 19th century via straw beds washed ashore from a shipwreck. Seeds from the straw quickly germinated in the island's rich soils, setting the scene for one of Australia's most famous dairies. Add 7,500 contented dairy cows who breathe the world's cleanest air and drink the purest rainwater, and you have all the ingredients for the best dairy produce in the country. Ashgrove Cheese

The Ashgrove milk and cheese factory is located at Elizabeth Town, in the heart of the dairying and cropping region in Northern Tasmania. Several generations of Bennett families have been farming the land surrounding the milk and cheese factory since the 1880's. Robur Farm Dairy

Robur Farm is Tasmania's largest commercial dairy goat herd, with access to daily clover feed to produce mild flavoured milk. Our milk is managed from paddock to plate for fresh, great tasting products. Robur Farm Dairy goat products are a great alternative to cow's milk as a source of calcium and protein in healthy diets. ood management of the goat herd results in premium quality milk that has been tested by the CSIRO who found an absence of volatile compounds that cause taints in flavour of many milks. Tasmanian Truffled Butter

Tasmanian Truffled Butter is a cultured French-styled butter with a creamy rich and delicate flavour - absolutely decadent!
Slice and put on warm steak, chicken or fish to allow it to melt over the piece, wafting off its delicate aroma. Use as an extra garnish with pasta or spaghetti, or simply add it to scrambled eggs (preferably infused truffled eggs) - the very best way to go!
